It’s officially summer which means one thing in my little town: tourists are coming! Every summer people flock to Newcastle for day trips, but why? If you’re visiting Northern Ireland for the first time, our smaller seaside town of Newcastle mightn’t be top of your list… but here’s why it should be.
Where the Mountains Of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea
Firstly the scenery is beautiful. As Percy French says in his song Mountains O’Mourne County Down is home to the Mourne Mountains and Newcastle is where they meet the sea. On a clear day in the summer you can see all the mountains carve their way across the skyline, building up to the highest peak in the range that is Donard before sweeping down into the sparkling blue sea. The Mournes are home to beautiful hiking trails which is a big draw for many people who visit us. They are also home to Northern Ireland’s highest peak, Donard.
Once you’ve completed your hike you can spend some time relaxing on the beach – if you can find a spot amongst all of the picnic blankets full of families basking in the Northern Irish weather (they are there come rain or shine, trust me). Don’t like sitting on a beach? Spend your time wandering along the promenade instead to soak up the beautiful sea air.

The major draw to being a seaside town is that you are spoiled for choice when it comes to ice cream, and it’s all local to Northern Ireland! Let’s discuss some of the best…
Cafe Mauds
Situated half way down Main Street and on the promenade, Mauds has the option to sit in and enjoy ice cream, waffles, crepes or savoury snacks/meals. They also do ice cream to take away. If you’re in you should definitely try the pooh bear ice cream – vanilla with honeycomb, yum!
Lick Gelato
Close to the Newcastle Leisure Centre Lick Gelato is home to a wide variety of flavours of both ice cream and gelato including millionaires shortbread, Eton mess, mango & raspberry and the occasional alcoholic beverage flavour!
Nugelto
Newcastle’s fanciest ice cream place, home to the popular Nuggy Pot. A large cup filled with your choice of sauce (chocolate, kinder bueno, white chocolate), two flavours of ice cream and three toppings (including fresh fruit, sweets, classic marshmallows & sprinkles). This place draws big crowds but is open late for all your evening ice cream fixes.
Morellis
Recently voted the top ice cream in the UK Morelli’s is a family run business who have a passion for ice cream. Located towards the end of town it’s the perfect stop on your way back to your car (or just as you’ve come off Donard). The best bit? It’s right opposite the beach – yummy ice cream and beautiful views, what more could you want?
Food Glorious Food
Whilst at university I always told people they wouldn’t be disappointed wherever they ate in Newcastle because everywhere is great. With any small town, word travels fast, so if your food isn’t up to scratch everyone is likely to know about it and soon. Between that and the tourist trade Newcastle has some fantastic places to eat, ranging from a full on sit down meal to a quick bite or a takeaway. Here are some of my favourites.
Villa Vinci
Classed as a Mediterranean restaurant, Villa Vinci is great for all tastes. One of the town’s most popular restaurants meaning you may have a wait without a reservation but trust me the food is worth it. From the second you walk into the restaurant you’ll understand the hype. Personally my favourite dish is the pasta arrabiata but their pizzas are top notch quality too.
Quinns Bar
One of many Newcastle locals, Quinns is a great place to grab a pub lunch and a pint (or other alcoholic/non-alcoholic drink). During the evenings Quinns is a lively hub of entertainment with all generations visiting it to enjoy a beverage but during the day they have a cosy feel with some yummy food offerings – a great choice if you’re looking for something informal but that will provide a good feed.
Sea Salt Cafe & Bistro
A very cleverly put together menu that allows you to customise your dishes to your tastes. A smaller cafe that offers sea views with a more intimate feel. My personal recommendation would be to go for breakfast and have the waffles. Yum!
John Macs Fish & Chip Shop
Did you really think I could write an article about my seaside town and not mention a fish and chip shop? Personally I believe this is the best one in town. John and his staff are friendly, fast and in the know. They have a good menu range all of which is at a reasonable price. The one thing he lacks though is inside seating so this is one to take out and bring back home to eat or enjoy along the prom.
Bonus Round: Tollymore Forest Park
So I am biased here as Tollymore is my local park but it genuinely is beautiful. There are trails for all (including some that venture up into the Mournes), picnic areas, red squirrel spotting and a deer themed play park. You will also spot groups in Night’s Watch cloaks as the first episode of Game Of Thrones was partly filmed in Tollymore almost a decade ago now. Tollymore is often used for filming and so you never know what you might stumble across on your walk.
