Along with exploring Bruges we decided since we were in Belgium anyway we’d spend a bit of time exploring Ghent. Getting the train from Bruges to Ghent was a lot easier than our initial train journey in – I think that’s because we’d learnt to just trust Google Maps. The train took just over twenty minutes and was a pleasant enough journey. Once at Gent-Sint-Pieters we got the tram to basically right outside our hotel (definitely not intentional but very handy). Not that anyone checked them but it’s worth noting you need to “punch” your ticket. Once you get on your tram there is a little machine to insert your ticket into, you then press one and it punches a hole in your ticket to show you validated it. I believe you can be fined if you don’t do it but that’s only from what I read online.
We arrived at our second Ibis hotel around 4pm and checked in. Our room was nice but the bathroom was a little small – not the end of the world but just worth noting. We spent a bit of time relaxing in the room and looking up things to do in Ghent. The beauty of no planning. My boyfriend found this illuminated walking tour on the Visit Ghent website that would allow us to see the sights of Ghent lit up at night so we decided on that for this evening. We spent the evening wandering around Ghent but decided we weren’t really up for a big meal so we grabbed a McDonalds and took it back to the hotel to enjoy in bed. A great idea having walked around a rather cold Ghent at night.
Having enjoyed a nice night’s sleep we woke up around 9:30am and headed out to explore the sights in the daylight. We started by heading to St Michael’s Bridge. It’s a postcard sight as you are surrounded by 360 degrees of the beautiful sights of Ghent.
We then proceeded to visit the Gravensteen which is a medieval castle from the 1100’s. The tour cost 6 euros, again as we were under 25, and included a free audio guide to explain the history of the castle. I read reviews about the audio guide being too young but personally I enjoyed it and found it nicely informative. The tour itself took us just short of two hours.
After walking around the Gravensteen we went for lunch by canal in a restaurant called De Witte Leeuw – I had a waffle because when in Rome right… After our lunch we stopped by HD chocolate to pick up some treats to try before going to see the Butcher’s Hall. We then went to St Bavo’s Cathedral, home to The Adoration of the Lamb before heading back to the hotel for a nap.
We left our hotel around 7:15pm that evening to go for dinner. We had hoped to go to Firenze but unfortunately they didn’t have any space (despite multiple empty tables at the time). We soon learned our mistake of not making a reservation as every restaurant we passed was extremely busy. We found this odd as we didn’t need any reservations whilst in Bruges. It got to the point where we were so hungry we ended up eating in McDonalds again. Not our finest moment but when you need to eat you need to eat. After dinner we headed back to the hotel to enjoy the warmth, watch a little TV and sleep.
The next morning we woke up around 10am, packed our bags and checked out. We also stored our bags in the hotel and then headed out to explore Ghent one last time. We decided we would walk up Ghent’s belfry which cost 2.70 euros. It took us around 45 minutes to explore the belfry before we headed off for an early last lunch. We decided to eat in Fritz tea room. The menu did not have anything in English (everything up to this point had) but the waiter was kind enough to help us out and explain the menu choices to us. I had one last waffle to end my time in Belgium. We then headed back to the hotel to pick up our bags, then got the tram to the train station and the train back to Brussels airport for our flight back to Dublin at 16:20.
Our time in Ghent was lovely but I did much prefer Bruges if I’m honest. I think Ghent is a beautiful city and it is certainly much more modern in terms of the style and culture of people there. If I was to redo the trip knowing what I do now I think I would spend three nights in Bruges and one in Ghent but head to Ghent a little earlier in the morning. Ghent itself is beautiful but we essentially saw all of the main sites during our walking tour. Overall though Ghent is definitely worth a visit at least once in your life, Bruges too for that matter. For my first adult city break Bruges and Ghent was a good choice and I’m already dreaming of where to go next. Until next time…
