Exploring Bruges in February

Exploring Bruges Pinterest

Back in February I ended up heading on a weekend break to Belgium after finding a good deal on flights. We flew from Dublin to Brussels on Ryan Air for just under £40 return each plus the 6 euro to upgrade to priority for the extra bag. We spent two nights at an Ibis hotel in Bruges followed by two nights at another Ibis in Ghent. It total our accommodation cost around £100 each for the four nights.

I had been to Bruges before but only as a child and it hadn’t been to do much sightseeing or exploring. I was particularly excited to spend 5 days chilling out in Belgium with my boyfriend at the time. We had no real plans and did not book any activities in advance, we each just had a list of things we wanted to see and decided on the day what we were going to do. Our flight left Dublin airport at 13:15 on Thursday 14th February (cannot tell you the amount of people who told me I was going to get engaged whilst away. Spoiler, they were all wrong) and landed into Brussels airport around 4ish.

This prompted the first issue of the trip – the train from the airport into Bruges. There was only one direct train every hour and we had just missed it by the time we got through the airport. We booked our tickets and then struggled to find the platform we needed to be on. My dad had told me before I left to just trust Google maps for the trains – he was right about this. We used GM to find the platform and get on the first train and then to find the platform once we had arrived at Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid/Brussels South (yes it was confusing).

We stayed at the Hotel Ibis Brugge Centrum which was around a 15 minute walk from the train station. It was lovely to walk through in the evening as there was hardly anyone around – it was so peacful, but cold. Due to going in February the weather in Bruges was rather chilly, we spent most of our time in coats and scarfs. I got a super coat from Uniqulo that kept me warm the entire time but could also pack down into a small sac. Here’s a non-sponsored link to it because it is a fabulous coat – particularly for springtime in Northern Ireland. The hotel was simplistic but nice, good if all you need it for is a place to refresh and sleep.

Once we had checked in we spent a bit of time chilling and looking at where we were going to eat that evening. We decided on an Italian restaurant close to our hotel named  Terra Promessa. The restaurant was cosy and quiet and the food yummy, I would recommend it. After our meal we headed towards the Belfry to do some exploring at night.

First night food and exploring

My boyfriend found a local bar he wanted to try out so after some wandering around we decided to try and find it. The name of the bar was De Garre and it was tough to find as it’s down a little alley way (I’ve popped some photos to help navigate to it if you’re intrigued). We tried their local beer you can only get in De Garre, although I must admit it wasn’t my favourite. After one drink we decided to call it quits and head back to the hotel to get some sleep. Having seen a little snippet of Bruges I was very excited to take it all in during the day.

De Garre

The next morning we woke up and chilled for a bit before heading out around 10:30am. We went straight to the Belfry Tower which was 10 euros as we were under 25. The Belfry works on a one-out-one-in system so we had a small wait but it wasn’t too bad. The climg up itself was a little steep but it’s well spaced with different levels and the views are definitely worth it. After walking up the Belfry we spent a little bit of time exploring the local square before heading to Lizzie’s Wafels for brunch. Lizzie’s menu states “extra large homemade waffles” and she’s not lying, I couldn’t finish mine. I had the waffle with maple syrup and a hot chocolate – yum. It’s worth noting that Lizzie’s Wafels, like a number of places in Bruges, was cash only so make sure you grab some cash before sitting down to eat.

The Belfry and Lizzies Wafels

After refuelling we went to see the Basilica of the Holy Blood only to find it was closed until 2pm. So instead we went exploring. We walked out to the Kruispoort Gate and then on to Sint-Janshuismolen, an active 18th century windmill before heading back into the center of town. By the time we were back in the center it was time to go see the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Good to see but not overly exciting if I’m honest. After seeing Christ’s blood we decided to stop for a drink at 2be – another location that is cash only. We got the local sampler (I can’t remember exactly but I feel like it was maybe only 10 euros or so) which worked out perfectly as the two beers my boyfriend wasn’t keen on were my favourite.

Exploring Bruges

After our drinks we headed back to the hotel via St Bonafictus Bridge (cute), Oliver’s chocolate and the Old Chocolate House. We then had a bit of a nap and got showered before heading back out to dinner. We decided this evening we’d head for dinner on the other side of the centre. We went to Carlito’s and I think we arrived at just the right time because we managed to snag a table in the back without a reservation. I had a pizza and a glass of the house red – again another yummy meal in Bruges. After our meal we wandered back to the hotel ready for bed.

The next morning we woke up around 10am packed our bags and headed down to check out. The hotel had a location to store luggage which was great as it meat we didn’t need to carry our bags around with us all day. As we didn’t have any plans we decided we would go to a Mummies In Bruges exhibition at Site Oud Sint-Jan. After the expo we went to Chez Vincent for frites for lunch and then to House of Waffles (yes the inspo was from Zoe’s post at Christmas time). After our delicious waffles we headed back to the hotel to collect our bags and chill in the lobby before getting a train to the next leg of our adventure…. Ghent!

Mummy Expo, Chez Vincent and House Of Waffles

Overall our time in Bruges was wonderful. Despite the cold I think February was a lovely time of year to go as Thursday evening and Friday it was so quiet, Saturday was busy yes but even then it was manageable. I would love to return in the future and maybe spend a bit of time doing a chocolate or beer tour. For now though it’s goodbye to Bruges and hello to Ghent, so keep your eyes peeled for my post all about exploring Ghent coming soon. Until next time…
