To Disney planners 180 is a significant number because you can officially book your dining reservations 180 days before your arrival date. If you’re staying onsite you get to book dining reservations for the first 10 days of your trip as soon as it reaches 180 days before and then you can continue to book the remainder of your reservations each new day. If you’re staying offsite you can only book each day 180 days before – meaning you’ll have to log on to book each reservation per day in turn.
If this is your first time booking dining reservations, I have a few suggestions:
- Take a look at the menus before you book – All of the menus are available to view either on the Walt Disney World (WDW) website of through the My Disney Experience app. Plus you can filter out restaurants based on food type, restaurant location, price range or dining plan type.
- Get used to the My Disney Experience App or section of the website before your 180 day mark – you can go online and play about with booking reservations without actually confirming anything. This will really help to put your mind at ease before the stress of actual reservations day.
- Dining reservations are available to book from 11am (UK time) – my advice is that you are logged in sitting waiting to book at 10:55am, especially if you’re after those hard to get reservations! Also take note that the 11am opening is for online booking. The reservation phone line does not open until 12pm (UK time).
- Link a card to your account before the 180 day mark – in order to secure your dining reservation you will need to link a payment card to your account (this is in case you don’t cancel your reservation in time), but guess what? You can do this ahead of time and save fussing with it during your reservation window
If you want some more information on the dining options at Walt Disney World my suggestion would be to check out Pinterest. As a planner I love Pinterest and there’s so much Disney content on there that it can get a little overwhelming at times. So let’s chat about My Disney Experience. It is the hub for all of your Disney trip bookings/plans/reservations. To help I’m going to go through booking a dining reservation both online and on the app (IOS version of the app).
- First things first – download the app from your app store (search Disney World) and/or create your Disney account if you don’t already have one. Dining reservations can be made on both the Walt Disney World (WDW) website or the My Disney Experience App (MDE), however I suggest booking your reservations through the website but getting used to the app for when you’re in the parks.
- The Main Menu Bar on the Website
- The Disney World App (IOS)
Once you’ve downloaded the app and made your account, have a little look around, get used to finding out information as when you get to the parks it will be vital for finding wait times, checking menus or navigating the parks.
Since it’s my preferred method I’ll start by explaining how to book your reservations through the WDW website.:
- Again from the main menu bar on the website select “Things to Do” then “Make Reservations”
- Next adjust the settings along the top to suit your date, party size and preferred reservation time – I’ve set my date to 3/9/18 and looked for a breakfast reservation for 3 people. Once you’ve set your preferences, you’ll get a list of the available restaurants and times for your to book.
Top Tip: If you want a specific reservation time, eg: 8am reservation at Be Our Guest, search for half an hour before your preferred time (ie: 7:30am).
The good thing about booking through the website is that it will also give you a list of the restaurants with no availability, so if you don’t see you choice check to make sure it’s not in that list!
- Once you’ve selected your time, the next step is to add your dining party. To have your party show up they will need to be listed in your Friends and Family section in your MDE account. After this, you’ll either put in your account details or select your stored card and then confirm, and that’s that, reservation booked! A confirmation email should arrive shortly after and your reservation should appear under the “My reservations and Tickets” section of MDE tab of the main menu.
Next let’s move on to how to book reservations from the App:
- First select the “Reserve Dining” option from the home page of the MDE app
- Next select your date, party size and preferred reservation time
- Take a look through the available options and choose a time that suits you
- Once you’ve selected an option you then confirm your details and payment options. Again once you’ve completed this step that’s it and you should receive a confirmation email shortly after and your reservation should appear just below the “Reserve Dining” option on the home screen.
Using our created skeleton plan and logging into the website bang on 11am UK time, we were able to get all the reservations we wanted and at our desired times. These included:
Breakfast at: Be Our Guest, Garden Grill & Tusker House
Lunch at: Teppan Edo, Via Napoli, a few of the restaurants in Disney Springs
Dinner at: Yak & Yeti, Sci-Fi Diner, ‘Ohana, Whispering Canyon Cafe
